Dear HollabackUK,
I'm often a victim of street harassment, but this most recent episode reminded me how much it gets to me.
I was with two friends (female) in Manchester city centre. We had just been for an early evening drink and were walking together down the street. Me and one of my friends were going to go in a different direction but offered to walk our other friend to the bus stop. There was a tall man smoking outside one of the bars we were about to pass, chatting to a much shorter guy opposite him. If I had been on my own I would have crossed the road (or had my earphones in, which helps me to ignore these people) but I try not to suspect everyone of being a moron, so after my initial reaction, thought no more about it. We were just about to pass the tall guy when he addresses all of us with "Girls" and asks us for directions. I often get asked for directions and know the city pretty well, so had no problem with stepping up and telling him where to go. I started to worry when he leaned over and asked for clarification. I told him again.
This is where it gets gross. Just as I start walking off he says, "Can I ask a favour?" Since I don't want to be rude, I reply, "What's that?" This is met with, "Can I cum on your tits?" It's strange how little I was shocked at this point, being more angry that I should have listened to my instincts. Despite having been in similar situations many times before I meekly replied, "Erm, no thank you. (sarcastically) That's reeeally nice though, thanks."
I went home, wondering how I could feel so violated by words (again), being angry at myself for not reacting more robustly and then finally mulling over what exactly that guy would need to hear to stop him from doing it again. I still haven't come up with anything.
